Twisted Atlantis

Adella was perplexed. Months and months of her younger sister whinging on about the wonders of the world above, as if it was indeed heaven, had driven her to distraction, and this excursion of her own.

She just didn't get it. There was freedom up in the dry, she had been told. She didn't feel it, she felt trapped. Up here the people were tied into ruffs and puffed sleeves and hosiery, so close, so confined. It had taken longer than she cared to remember to find the seamstress, the talent which make silk feel and flow like water. Now it was all she could bear to wear.

Walking was a challenge, heels were a nightmare, so she kept her feet bare, needing at least to feel the grass, soil or stone beneath her feet. She was still searching for wonders. Her sister had talked non-stop of the palace, the parties, the glamour and glitz. These... she had seen. People flashing as much as any fishscale ever had in an attempt to disguise their true nature. It was exhausting. She would change things.

Even above the tide, her fins could flash in the moonlight, her will tugged at the tide. She wanted to show the flighty people of the land true freedom, found only under the waves. As the moon waxed to fullness, the swell of the sea would come. Atlantis would soon be a new realm in the deep.

Twisted Reunion

At the furthest reaches of the winding gravel track lay the church. So far from the town it seemed impossible that it had ever been a regular place of worship for the number of people it could comfortably hold. Its grandeur and inexplicable presence made all the more remarkable by the constant shimmer of twilight which began on approach, darkening the closer any visitor came, regardless of the direction, or time of day.

Here in the dark, there would often be nothing to see, nothing to hear besides the soft scratchings of vermin, the gentle cries of the bats high above. At other times, strains of organ music drifted on the air, while candle flames set the stained glass in the windows glinting. The curtain of the confessional drawn back, the mouldering velvet covered wood of the seat within creaked as it took the weight of one a far cry from the priesthood. The book fell open with spine cracked familiarity, murmured words and the chill air filled with the blooming scent of roses. Tap, tap, tap, the impatient drumming of fingers waiting to be joined by the beat of another's heart.

Long cold candles combusted, illuminating the living and the dead. Their warmth carried the aroma of roses with the spark of flame, drifting over rosewood and all it contained. Old bones, life regained. Silk spun centuries earlier rustled as it began to move.

"Reunion... " A twisted prayer had brought them here, the concluding word at the end of countless experiments, trials and searches. Could it finally be true... Eyes which had long gazed only only the stars, the firmament of eternity took some time to resolve on the reality of shadow and stone. Could she see him now? Would she know him again?

Three cries from her birds etched in wood were all it took. Final forgiveness found in the the resumption of their eternal kiss. Their danse macabre would begin again, within the walls of their sanctuary, in their own private midnight.

That's right my darlings of darkness, the Twisted Hunt is back again, ready to bend your brain and your camming abilities to find the right demonic cube from the its dancing denizens of decoys... ok seriously enough with the alliteration. You know the drill! It's the hardest hunt in Second Life, and for that, one of the absolute best. This year the colour of the hunt is a beautiful Burgundy Wine, and the theme - Victorian Gothic.

Twisted Hunt 2016

Something was stirring outside...

Something was stirring outside, under the earth. It wasn't the purposeful meanderings of the little folk in their velvet coats searching for worms or a mate, but still it had purpose. Out in the orchard the leaves still tracked the movement of sun, not yet turning the shades of autumn soon to come, while the fruitful harvest blushed and fell. Something deeper moved, turning more rapidly than sun or moon. What was it? What was it? She could feel it coming...

Catdog had been of remarkably little help, moreso even than usual, and that was indeed something on which one could remark. For hours she had tried to question the beast - it's button eyes regarding her with innocence in every stitch. Straightforward, or cryptic, her questions received no answers, though she was certain it knew something, though it spoke only in riddles and quotes from the silver screen. She turned to the cards, they could be evasive in their turn of course, whenever she looked too intensely, posed too direct a query. As she dealt, the cards themselves seemed to mock her, over and over she asked, rephrasing, reasking, desperate to know. Finally, a cough from catdog as the grinding noise of things spinning, moving through earth grew louder from the orchard, she flopped forward, cursing her own idiocy.

Her collapse into fury and bewilderment at her own lack of foresight lasted only a moment, she ran outside, not a moment to lose. The oldstone was glowing, casting flickering light over the ground, over the spinning cubes as they broke free of the earths grip, to fly off, left and right, up and down. A low cackling flew with them, laughter hysterical and inane. She cried out with delight to see them fly. What had distracted her? What fog had covered her eyes to blind her to the date, to the return of the twisted cubes? It mattered not. They were back, and now they were out there, ready for the taking by any hand or eye quick enough to glimpse their hiding place. Waiting for nothing, she began to run, into the the night, after the blue tinged nightmares.

Twisted Fall 2016!

This is the SIXTEENTH Twisted Hunt - I've been as distracted as the woman in my tale - there's a lot a lot going on RL right now - and there will be for the forseeable future - so this kinda snuck up on me this year - but it could not have come at a better time.

As ever - this is the hardest hunt in all of Second Life - and for no small measure is the best for that! There are no clues - save those on offer from those other twisted folk in the group chat who cobble together lists of hints as the hunt progresses - please remember to ask nicely- a please and a thankyou go a long way, and believe me it's easier for us to find a hint if you have the number of the store you are stuck on as well as the name! The chat is fun and friendly - one of the best parts of the hunt.

There are 91 stores, there can be 10 visible decoy cubes in addition to the prize cube - which will be in sight somewhere. If you choose to de-render - be warned - there are unlimited decoys allowed in walls, floors, ceilings etc!

The Twisted Hunt 2014 Spring - Magick In The Make

She knew today would be the ideal day to do some magick. Already the dreams had been promising. Her protecting spirit, a mighty golden dragon, had visited her the night before. She knew her powers would soon be pouring out and flowing free. She gently moved her fingers, tentatively, and she felt the familiar tingle under her skin. Magick was accumulating in her, slowly surging, swirling, waiting to be released. Suddenly she noticed the dim light taking shape in her palms. Oh yes... an Orb of Power... she hadn't summoned one for ages. But today was the day to do some magick. She was slowly rolling the blob of energy around in her palms and she was quietly smiling.

It is Spring. Do you know how I know? Because the Spring edition of the Twisted Hunt has started today! This year the theme is "Magick", and the creators, whose shops I had the time to visit, have lived up to the expectations quite marvellously. The Twisted Hunt 2013 Spring - Alice On The Run

Alice knew something weird was going on in the enchanted realm behind the Looking Glass. Not that the land and its inhabitants had ever been what people usually call “normal”, not at all... but what Alice noticed was well over the edge even by their standards. The Caterpillar gave up smoking because, as he told Alice, it was bad for his health. The Mock Turtle applied for university because he wanted to become an actor and be called The Authentic Turtle. And the Mad Hatter... better to forget about him. He decided to open a luxury shop where he sold dresses to the Red Queen and her court.

“Beware the jabberwock, my girl!” – Alice heard a raspy voice while she was brooding under a gigantic mushroom, generally feeling abandoned and alone. “’Tis his work! Beware! Run, Alice, and don’t look back!” “Who are you?” – Alice asked. “Oohhh... I’m the Terrible Jubjub Bird, only that I’m un-jubjubbed... I’m harmless now and need someone to feed me!” – answered the mysterious speaker who, as Alice saw, was nothing else but a small mockingbird in a cage. In this very moment Alice heard a distant growl... and she knew the Jabberwock was close. She picked up the cage and started running through the forest of mushrooms, towards the Looking Glass.

Ladies and gentlemen, if you also wish to lose even the rest of your sound mind, jump on the band wagon of the Twisted Hunters! The principal rule is that there are no rules and clues, shop owners can be as wicked as they’ve ever wanted to be and they may hide the prizes anywhere, under floorboards and in chimneys... so that you may feel really really rewarded when you pick up the right damn lil rotating cube after hitting on the umpteenth decoy.

Twisted ladies

Its that time again... the self proclaimed hardest hunt in SL has returned, spreading another layer of insanity on those who attempt it, this time with a dark blue glaze of crazy.  DV8 have stepped back from SL, it's truly odd to start Twisted anywhere other than their headquarters, but those who have taken over the reins have done an outstanding job. 194 stops (with very few drop outs). No hints other than those you ask for in group chat. Decoys galore (well, 10 visible anyway... beware derendering or wireframe - you may be blinded by the unlimited decoys hidden in walls, floors, objects...) That's all before the the nightmarish endgame, complete with mindbending riddles. So put your tin foil hat on, and get involved!  Here's a selection of my favourite finds.

Irena could only sit and wait in her cage until the hour ticked to midnight. Some called it the witching hour, and at some times of the year, indeed it was. But not now. Not this month. When the lock clicked open, she would be free to cause mayhem. Running through the forest she would aim for those whose twisted minds called her, dancing through their stores and businesses, hiding their wares. Upturning potplants, sticking furniture to ceilings and rehanging artwork upside down. Where she could, the pulled at the threads of the stores themselves, daubing them in her colours, covering every surface with her design. She focused on the lock, twirling her hair around and around, tightening the twists as the clock ticked, the door sprang open. Jumping out into the night, her skirts billowing around her, it was time to cause some trouble...

Mirabella had had a long night. Following shoppers and hunters around for hours, clip clopping her hooves on tile and carpet to add to their confusion as they searched for the little boxes. Light reflected from the shiny latex of her dress, dappling walls with shifting shadows and highlights. While her eyes were hooded with  varying shades of darkness, her mischievous eyes glowed bright with the blue of the boxes these people hunted so assiduously. Their grumblings about the difficulty of their hunt, the twisted genius of each hiding place, the curses and oathes were music to her ears. It was a long and winding path they had to wander, and she was tired. There would be time enough the next night to annoy and befuddle others. Settling back on the large skeletal hands that made up her comfiest sofa she yawned, and relaxed into the moonlight.

Eight was who she was. She was the spirit who condensed in the air with the birth of each new contingent of boxes. She had her counterparts, there was a male who tread the same insane steps as her, and they had been joined by a third, the tiny feet of the petite spirit running along streams of consciousness. Born of the darkness they played with beams of light, shining hope into dark corners, only to twist and shift it away as anyone approached, cackling insanely all the while. Like Venus from her shell she emerged each night, tentacles protecting her while she slept, the blue box recharging her energies. Rising and stepping quietly out, her hands came together, the swirling tendrils of glowing insanity forming between her fingers, stretching out to light her way, leading her on toward those minds still whole, at least, for now...

Divine Blues

She used to be a member of the Sapphire Tribe, she remembered that very well. Many, many aeons before her world had been vivid, happy and busy… she could hear the voices of men and women and children every evening she climbed up on top of the Tower, in order to taste a bit of everyday life before she had to commence night service, as usual. She had been taken from her family in order to serve the Goddess at the tender age of a hundred and fifty years… oh yes, she still remembered the excruciating pain. Her mother and siblings had been inconsolable… or so she thought, as she hadn’t talked to them any more. Rubbing shoulders with „ordinary” folk wasn’t permitted to the Selected One. 

She was carefully educated by the Elders, and after five hundred years of apprenticeship she was allowed to raise the Moon all alone for the first time. She still got goosebumps at the memory of that very special night. Then… something went wrong. Slowly, yet without any doubt whatsoever. At first, she noticed that the evening buzz and humming and chattering of the city became weaker day by day. People just disappeared from the streets, the murmuring sounds seemed to grow dimmer, and dimmer yet. Then, one evening… all she could hear from the Tower was silence. 

She was shocked… but she remembered she had taken a solemn oath to serve the Goddess and raise the Moon each and every night, until Death decided to come for her. She was alone, her only company were the memories and the ghosts of the past, yet she climbed up on top of the Tower, and silently whispered an ancient prayer before she touched the chilly globe. „Raise, Moon, and spread your rays... I shall always be here to welcome you when your duty is done.”

Oh, Twisted Hunt... why do you have to tempt me so? Despite of all the decoys, the 'hunts inside of the hunt' and the various curses that escaped me while searching my way through the variety of stores, I once again couldn't resist to participate. Of course, I could simply refrain from doing it when it annoys me so, but... you can see one of the reasons why I fought insanity to find that little, rotating cube of purple evil nonetheless above. Yes, two of the three more than generous prizes from a store I've come to like for its extraordinary creations: gilded:

The goodies were comparatively easy to find (No.3 is a lovely pose which isn't shown in this post), but even if I'd have had to derender the entire store to grab hold of them, I'd done it without batting an eye. White satyr legs, even more when made in such a stunning fashion, fuzzy fur pants and fancy hair always make me drool - I just can't help it! The Unseelie Hair is a piece of sculpted goodness that can be worn with or without a hairbase and comes in two sizes, small and large, while alpha-layers prevent you from nasty visual bugs when you're wearing your brand new hooves. I'm off to hop through the woods for a little more... don't forget to pay gilded: a visit until the 30th of September when the Twisted Hunt ends, and treat yourself with these little pieces of art!
