Why I Relay - Fantasy Faire 2016

Each year it came to this. In amongst all of the hustle and bustle, the crowds and the adventure, this moment came.Was it coincidental that moments of reflection tended to come near the water? Be it rhythmic movement of waves gently lapping against the harbour wall, droplets of water arcing through the air from a fountain to meld with a pond, or the sudden welling of tears in her eyes.

This year, she did not want the tears. Even as she wiped them away from her eyes, a sardonic smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "As if anyone wanted tears!" Like everyone drawn in to the Fairelands, she was captivated not only by the beautiful surroundings, as breathtaking as they were; nor by the vast array of goods on offer, as exquisite as they were. She was drawn by what it meant. By what a disparate group of individuals could achieve when they were working toward one goal.

This year I had an idea of the look I wanted to create for my 'Why I Relay' blogger challenge as soon as I saw the skin from Plastik. The more I thought about it however, the less I wanted to think about hope or a cure being something celestial, something otherworldly. In reality, hope can be something made of pain. Pain can inspire hope, calling it into being where there had been no need for it before. Pain can erode hope, wearing it away over time. The less that has to happen, the happier we all can be. Since writing for this challenge last year, there have been losses, there are also survivors. Cancer has taken my cousin, a wonderful woman who was a daughter, sister, aunt and mother. Relatives and friends have received diagnoses, treatment beginning, remission reached. I don't want to write about a cure being something made of magic, from some distant galaxy. A cure is what we relay for, it's why we do this. So research can continue. Real people, right here, working to find a way. The cure is getting closer. Until then, we will come together like this. After that - we'll do it for the sheer love of each other, and all this love can achieve.

Why I Relay. Fantasy Faire 2015

The nights were hard. The days were too of course. There was no hour, minute or moment that wasn't a fight. Wasn't a victory, or a loss. The spirit she embodied was with each who needed her, and they needed her all of the time. That she strove against was insidious, well named in its malignancy. Great strides had been taken through time, understanding had bloomed, science and faith combining, moving against the enemy hand in hand. The people had played their part, for whatever they were able. The diagnosis which had been a sentence could still strike terror with each syllable; the caring hand and dedicated mind could now, thanks to the work of so many, allow for hope. She, as the spirit of defence, protection, and hope could take the guise needed most by each who called on her. She has the backing of billions. All who have lost someone to the fight. All who are still fighting. All who, while untouched themselves can see, feel or try to imagine what it would take. For all that has been accomplished, for all that has been lost. For everyone. Fight on. Why I Relay.

I took on this blogger challenge last year at the Faire, and knew it would be one I would return to again. Tears have been sliding down my face as I have written this, just as they did before. And that's ok. The Fantasy Faire is far from the only time I let myself think about what cancer has taken from so many, and more selfishly, from my own existence. 

I've written in the past about my aunt. No words can do justice to the sorrow of loss. 

Here, and at the Faire, the loss is felt, but the focus is on the hope. The hope I feel, the hope pouring out from creators and donors, providing a beautiful environment for reflection, and a view of a possible future. 

The question of the challenge, why I relay is painfully simple. 

I relay because there is hope. 

There is hope for two of my cousins, both now facing down their own fight against cancer. 

I hope for them. 

I relay for them. 

I relay for hope.

I relay for the day we won't need hope for this any longer.

A new future

For centuries past, all the lands and seas around the citadel had contributed to its greatness. From beginnings many in the capital today would call inauspicious, a small fishing village on a natural harbour, amazing changes had occurred. Morgyn was a descendant of that hamlet, though her rise had little to do with lineage.

She had spent more than hours, more than days pondering the reasons behind the world, and the way it was today. This intellect had played a part in her attaining her current status, but had not helped her reach any concrete conclusion. Night followed day, and still people came, came bearing the profits of their labour, came to offer it up as part of something bigger than themselves. Those with nothing came to look upon what was made, and were inspired by it.

Still she had to wonder, what was it all for? The charm of the village, as rustic and run down as it was, had been buried beneath stone. Stone was topped with iron, steel, then silver and gold. Precious metals were chased and inlaid. It brought prestige, it brought envoys, it raised the working coastline to an empire. Had piled up riches in the hands and under the feet of those who had never toiled to earn them. Tradition and tradition alone, of appointment by lottery had brought her to these halls, to rest on drifts of diamonds.

She had it. The long night of the celebration ball and all its revelry faded as morning light crept across the shining floor of her chambers. The people came, they brought all they could. Her plans would unfold swiftly, those of the citadel were more misguided by greed and practice than malice, they would see the error of their ways, and the rightness of these new actions. All desired the betterment of their world, it would no longer be confined to their capital. Each would turn their talents and the fruits of their enterprise to their homes, to the lands of their friends. Diamonds and pearls would no longer outshine the beauty of wood and earth. All that could be made would be made, all that minds could imagine, and all would be able to see it.

Walking the wilderness

The dried up stream bed passed beneath Nahuel's feet without the slightest sound. Blades of grass folded, succumbing to his weight; twigs bent and stone ground against stone under him, muffled to muteness by the movement of his body, never erring, lithe on shoeless feet. He had come this way without thinking, no particular quarry in mind. The kills the previous day would feed the camp for at least another. Walking alone through the dawn was his intention, silently wandering through new territory to see what could be seen.

Not everything could hope to be so silent. In the stillness, the glow of golden early morning light seemed to dance on every surface it touched. Vibrations of light, such as a finely tuned ear could almost hear. Something caught his attention, the feeling and sensation of movement, though none could be seen when he turned his head to look. Out here, for the most part he was predator, not prey, that was the better part of the balance, the way it had been for most of his life. Times when strangers came were few, they had never left, but become part of their group, or had chosen a different path, taking nothing of themselves with them but spirit. Spirits seemed to move from fading to lingering shadows, something was walking with him in the glade.

Somebody say cookies?

Greedy, greedy, greedy. She couldn't help it.

Working in the snack cabin all day, she was surrounded by delicious morsels from opening to close. Hers was no ordinary kiosk, everything they stocked was home made, delivered fresh each morning, or throughout the day as her group of bakers and makers arrived, gingham swaddled trays in hand. Business woman as she was, the cookies fascinated her at the moment, even more than the profits which could be made from them. A new baker had brought them in such a variety of flavours, each tasting so good she had to add them to her collection. One day strawberry would be her absolute favourite, the next chocolate, the next cherry. Today was all about lime. The crumble of biscuit, the smoothness of the icing. If her customers weren't quick, soon there would be none left.

Newness! Newness all round. I finally got mesh mouthed, with a Loud Mouth, and have been playing around with various skins and appliers. Some seem easier to match up than others, on low graphics (my usual state for RP etc) some just won't work for me, the difference in texture from skin to applier is too great, and I just looked weird. Combinations like this - some have improved with higher graphics settings, some not - so I will continue to fiddle with those. Other skin combos look good with the Loud Mouth even on low graphics - the pics above were taken on ultra of course, but I'm sat by by fireside now in the lowest of settings and I still look normal!

Battles in Wonderland

Alice had long been told she was mad. "After all, we are all Mad here..." The Hatter's saying may as well have been the National Anthem of Wonderland, if people there could put aside their contrariness and concentrate for long enough to make such a decision. That, of course, was about as likely as the caterpillar putting aside his pipe, or the dormouse staying dry. This was not to say that nothing ever changed there, no. Alice's reputation as 'Mad' had been confirmed for many by her rebellion against the Queen of hearts. Was it mad to stand up against tyranny? Alice couldn't think so. It could feel like a never ending task, visiting friends and strangers; letting them know the reign of the Queen was at an end, along with all of her inexplicable rules. There would always be those not accepting of change, and then further battles would follow. If they called her mad for making a change, or mad for expecting them to change along with her she didn't mind. With her Cheshire she would walk the new Wonderland, setting minds and hearts free.

 First post of items from The Fantasy Gacha Carnival in November. The theme this month is MMORPG Battlefield, and there are, as ever, items from the wonderful designers to suit all tastes and RP styles. I've tried hard this month to stick to advice of others who play the gachas, try three times, if you didn't get the item or the colour you were after, c'est la vie. Move on. I say I tried. I didn't always succeed... Still, gachas being gachas, that just means I had some very lucky friends who got my duplicates!

Fantasy Gacha Carnival

Jack and Jill part 2

The motel had seen better days, better months, better years. Decades had passed since any new coat of paint had licked across the frontage, aside of course, from the nightly daubings of local gang tags claiming  territory. The Orachtes Hotel had over time, with the smashing of each neon letter, become the Rat Hoel. All the facilities remained, only a little different from the original brochure, still tacked up on the reception wall as testament to the hotel's long history. Room security was guaranteed no longer by the friendly night watchman, but by thick iron bars across each window. You could still sleep sound, so long as whoever had a copy of the skeleton key had missed any dull glow from the rooms single lamp. Amazingly, the diving board remained. Burned in places, and splintered, yet it loomed as large as it ever had, over a pool with more life in it now, though smaller and slimier, than the laughing splashing bodies it had once contained. Perhaps, come this summer, the place would be cleaned, tidied up, made welcoming once more to road trippers. The new owners were, after all, a little unconventional.

Merry Crisis!

It had been a long time, and she had been hiding beneath the earth. Hiding from others and herself. There was no need to think when buried so deep, and very little else to do but think - and sleep. So she had slept, and hidden, hidden and slept, covered by the earth through warmth of summer and fall of autumn. Now winter had come, chill penetrating the earth, icy fingers of Jack Frost tickling along her spine, beckoning her back to the surface, to play in the ice and snow.

Christmas had passed, but magic and merriment still hung over the world, steaming in clouds of fog from the mouths of drunks staggering from each tavern and bar. The new year was yet to break, and this night would be the longest and darkest for centuries. She emerged with the stars, by their distant light she pulled on ruby red skates, glittering and glinting. As the eclipse covered the moon, the only glow would come from the lights wrapped around her skating and sliding across the icy river.

Institutional Art

First days back at school were always a little different. Here at the Institute of Arts, where designers mingled with mystics and critics, things were perhaps a little more different than usual.

The mid afternoon gloom of mists rolling in off the lakes set the tone for those congregating on that side of the campus.

Rather than be restricted by medium, the institute was subdivided by muse. Kindred spirits of poet and sculptor worked side by side for the glorification, or damnation of their inspiration.

Dark played with Light in the minds of the artists as much as it ever did on canvas. Friendships and collaborations shifted with the refilling of each coffee cup.

Cigarette smoke curled into the mist as circles of glowing red embers danced with the flow of conversation, never to fall beneath the grind of a heel. This place, and all those in it were works of art.

There's something about this shade of teal that I just can't get enough of. I'm not a fan of blue in general - as in, it would not be my favourite colour - though I can certainly agree it has its uses. But this teal shows up in so many things I see and think innately beautiful. It also goes insanely well with this beautiful skin!

The whole styling of this lot pleases me immensely.

Endless Summer beach stroll...

Chloe had walked along the beach, mile after mile, the sun riding high in the sky, her feet pressing shallow imprints in the wet sand. The flipflops were no hindrance on her stroll, the feeling of the sand between her toes was just about her favourite thing in the world.  She would pause from time to time, picking up shells, marvelling as the softest tones of pinks, blues and browns merged, fading into creams and whites. Some, she would slip into her pockets, to add to her collection at home, others, she would skim into the waves, recycling the minute homes of the sea creatures for another generation under the sea.

The sun on her skin was hot as the thin high clouds scudded lightly out to sea. Waves crashing against the rocky outcrops and reefs in the cove were the soundtrack to her walk, adding a pounding rhythm to the soft tune she hummed as she walked along. Further along the shore she saw a group she knew, surfboards jammed into soft sand, watching the waves. Raising her hand to wave, the filpflops she carried clunked lightly together in her grip, showering her with falling grains of sand. Rolling her eyes at herself, she laughed softly, and ran along the waters edge to join her friends.

Ange ou Démon

There were always two paths, sometime more, but never less. Not before you had chosen, or had been chosen. Fate or destiny may decide, but there was always a choice to be made at the start. Up or Down is too simplistic, as both are everywhere. Paths divert, the roads may meet again.

Ange chose the light. It shone from her eyes, and from her very soul. She could not shift her gaze from it, nor did she wish to. In the light she saw the world, all of the good in it, in everyone. As she walked her path, having made her choice, she felt the darkness that surrounded, and did not mind. She was nothing without it. There could be no light without dark. As she held the light in her hands, she was grateful for the path she was on, and that there were others who had chosen differently.

Démon chose the darker path. Hers was the way of shadows, darkness guided her every step, and led her toward her goals. All the light she saw and felt from others in and out of the world, that pressed against her and her works just made them all the clearer. Darkness defined Light, as Light defined Darkness. The path was easy for her, it had been her choice, and suited her perfectly, she grew into it, taking joy from each step, forever pushing the balance.

Unlike most of her designs, these are not hand drawn by Mzzy, but are an amalgamation of traditional etchings, scripts and pictagrams. Démon

Skin : [Plastik]-Aquamer-Gills-Koiberry This might be an old skin, I looked around at Plastik to see if it was still available, and I'm not 100% sure. The colouring is just beautiful, all the little scales. There are many there that are close and worth a look if this exact skin and shade isn't available!

Bloody Mess...

She stalked through the darkness, each step less than a whisper, each movement fluid as silk in a stream. Her pace may once have been measured, a skill learned. All these centuries later, it had faded from any memory she cared to let flow through her mind, it was as natural as breathing, or in her case, pretending to when it suited her needs.

As the night progressed, as victims fell to her charm, her touch, her kiss, their blood coated her skin. As she fed, her deathly chill palled. Her own flesh warmed by the blood of others, their lives keeping her going, feeding her wants and desires. Killing was far from her intention on most of these occasions, though those who put up a fight were more to her palate than any who would give it up willingly. No weakling could quench her thirst, receiving, as well as inflicting wounds was all part of the fun. As the edges of the sky began to lighten, her feast drew to a close. All creatures of the night turned to whatever they called home, keeping to the darkness through the blazing day.

I love the darkness, no denying that. This is startlingly close to how you may find me in-world, where indeed I frequently wear these blood layers in RP. Here shown are the 3 Stages of Mess beginning with "A Little Mess" moving on to "Give Me More" and then the grand finale "Bloody Mess", created by a muse of mine, Mzzy Wytchwood, for her ✚REDRUM✚brand.

The blood comes in ALL LAYERS possible, including a tattoo layer, so you can wear the blood on your skin, under your clothes or on top of them, the choices are yours and endless. The real beauty of this for me is the way it can be worked into RP. Sure, often I walk into a scene already coated in the redstuff, at other times, during a fight, or a feed, it's amazing to be able to add to the action with increasing wounds and smears, making the whole scene truly immersive. Looking closely at the neck you can see bite wounds, making the set suitable for those who like to be bitten as well as to bite.
