This was interesting...

Neon glowed, soft and red in the darkness; giving the space the feeling of internal, if not infernal warmth. Stepping through the door from the street marked a change, more than location, a change of state.

Though separated from the busy street outside by mere millimetres of glass and aluminium, the space, soft and warm was otherworldly. A gentle scent caught her attention. Looking around she could see no cause, though with each step the scent bloomed, earthy and fulsome. A gentle tickle at her neck explained all. Under the strange light, the tiny plantlet in her necklace was flourishing.

There were others there... had been others there, though she could not see them, she could feel them. Feel the effect they had had on this place, and how it had affected them in turn.

That was it... the cables on the floor, sockets and plugs, traced to outlets which were unconnected, and yet the lights still glowed. The power was coming from within, it was created by all who cared to come.

*Thump*

She should know better. Walking around, even half asleep in her slippers was not usually a problem, but when she had jumped wholeheartedly into a late night idea to rewire, re-jig, and reinstall a lighting and music installation...

Huffing, puffing, and shuffling followed before she emerged again; this time fully clothed and in footwear eminently more suitable for electrical maintenance. The concept was there, ceilings, walls, floor... But, was there something missing?

Narrowing her gaze she reached out and tweaked one of the bulbs, settling the flickering light into a more pleasing rhythm, along with the others.

"There." The low growl of her voice, silk rippling over shards of slate belied her appearance for many who heard it. "That's better." Clapping her hands together, the room was ready, the gathered could come.

It's been a while! Not that long since Twisted, but since logging into SL for more than a few moments - not specifically for events such as the Fantasy Faire or Twisted - it feels like years. While I'm feeling all sad and blue today at the loss of what had been my own tight knit community, I'm taking heart from another I stumbled across. A group of people coming together, as I've witnessed time and again in SL, to help out and support someone they care about.
For the love of the Devil is a shopping event where 100+ designers have come together as one to help a fellow SL resident: Andrea Damone (Devil Damone) 100% of the proceeds go directly to her to help support her during a difficult time.

This year, in May and June a friend of many in Secondlife, Andrea Damone (Devil Damone) went in for what should have been a very routine surgery. But things did not go to plan, and Andrea spent many weeks in an induced coma fighting for her life. We are blessed that she has fought her way back and although her recovery continues, she is home and getting stronger by the week. Unfortunately the cost of keeping Andrea with us has fallen on her greatly. She has many expenses and bills resulting from this ordeal that she has to now face, while continuing to maintain her determination and fighting spirit through physical and emotional therapy.
Andrea had no idea of our plans, but many of her friends have wanted to do something to help. It's hard in Secondlife to offer support, when often we are so far away from a friendly hug, or a knock on the door with offerings of support. We decided, what we can do is try to help her with the burden of these expenses the only way we can.

Burning sands - Tres Chic and Exposeur

One world had ended. That was how it felt, because that was how it was. The past was firmly relegated to a distinct era of its own as the fired burned. The fires, distant as they were from where she wound up, still scarred the sky. Eye protection was advisable.

Everything in the what was now the 'old' seemed to have come together to destroy itself. Such a cobweb of events, cause and effect, the beat of too many butterflies wings. "It's orchestrated!" those on the fringes screamed, placards waving in faces bland with complacency and internalised fear. Such shouts had only grown louder, voices added each day, and matched in equal measure by screams of opposition from televisions and posters, instructing the masses to believe, even as the cracks tore open.

The world had broken apart, sloughing off centuries of humankind's scratchings at its surface. None of them, the lucky ones who had made it to this island, knew how many other such castaways there may be out there. There was talk already of sending out search parties, building more boats. There must be others out there, others who could believe in something better, of taking what they had left and building a better future. She hope there would be enough of them, enough to overcome those who had caused it all.

Fantasy Faire - the last dance

Morning had broken, like the first morning. Though, this was the last morning, and the bird cawing over the alcove in which she had slept, while black, was distinctly corvid in nature. Mist thickly carpeted the tunnel system snaking its way through the landscape, as she stretched and yawned, it was through these tunnels she would fly.

Each of the Fairelands had a charm all of its own. There were hours when the brightness and pretty colours called, windmills and bunting turning cheerfully. Others, she needed the hustle an bustle of the sun drenched marketplace, the blown sand scouring everything clean. Mostly though, she was drawn to the twilight and the darkness, as only in these places could the lights be seen to shine. It was here the lights of remembrance could be found, one by one in niches or on branches, in groups, crowding shelves and alcoves, creating all the heat they needed to rise into the air and dance. It was here you would find her, on this, the last day of the Faire.

Soon the mists would rise higher, all the wonderful worlds drawn into being by the Faire would be engulfed, drifting apart for another year. Endings, always horribly sad, were not permanent. Anything learned, or gained would remain, carried within until the calendar brought everyone together again. There was not long left now, she would rather rejoice in what had been achieved than let herself sink into sorry. She would like to take you with her, to stay as long as possible in the world they had created, to stay happy, and revel in the beauty that could be found. She's waiting, all you have to do is reach out, and take her hand.

Why I Relay - Fantasy Faire 2016

Each year it came to this. In amongst all of the hustle and bustle, the crowds and the adventure, this moment came.Was it coincidental that moments of reflection tended to come near the water? Be it rhythmic movement of waves gently lapping against the harbour wall, droplets of water arcing through the air from a fountain to meld with a pond, or the sudden welling of tears in her eyes.

This year, she did not want the tears. Even as she wiped them away from her eyes, a sardonic smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "As if anyone wanted tears!" Like everyone drawn in to the Fairelands, she was captivated not only by the beautiful surroundings, as breathtaking as they were; nor by the vast array of goods on offer, as exquisite as they were. She was drawn by what it meant. By what a disparate group of individuals could achieve when they were working toward one goal.

This year I had an idea of the look I wanted to create for my 'Why I Relay' blogger challenge as soon as I saw the skin from Plastik. The more I thought about it however, the less I wanted to think about hope or a cure being something celestial, something otherworldly. In reality, hope can be something made of pain. Pain can inspire hope, calling it into being where there had been no need for it before. Pain can erode hope, wearing it away over time. The less that has to happen, the happier we all can be. Since writing for this challenge last year, there have been losses, there are also survivors. Cancer has taken my cousin, a wonderful woman who was a daughter, sister, aunt and mother. Relatives and friends have received diagnoses, treatment beginning, remission reached. I don't want to write about a cure being something made of magic, from some distant galaxy. A cure is what we relay for, it's why we do this. So research can continue. Real people, right here, working to find a way. The cure is getting closer. Until then, we will come together like this. After that - we'll do it for the sheer love of each other, and all this love can achieve.

It was all going swimmingly... Fantasy Faire 2016

Adrienne had had it. Had it up to the gills. It had started slowly, centuries earlier, or so the tales caved into the sacred story rocks told. A new shadow on the surface, on the barrier between their world, and the dry suffocating world above. A new creature, that's all. So they had thought.

It was carved, it had become part of their history. Just a new creature, a new predator. One day there would be no fish, where there had been fish before. Another, there would be a slick of blood and oil marring the surface; bones cracked and burned fell through the water to pile on sands. No predator hunted so indiscriminately, none took so much, sweeping vast swathes of the sea clear.

This night she would rest. They all would. They needed to. Come the morning, with the turn of the tide, the seas would change. Shoals of fish swept away would reform. Bones had always carpeted the deep. The clog of plastic, however, was stifling the ocean. The world above had contaminated the seas for too long. Tomorrow they were going to give it all back. The stones would be carved anew.

Somebody say cookies?

Greedy, greedy, greedy. She couldn't help it.

Working in the snack cabin all day, she was surrounded by delicious morsels from opening to close. Hers was no ordinary kiosk, everything they stocked was home made, delivered fresh each morning, or throughout the day as her group of bakers and makers arrived, gingham swaddled trays in hand. Business woman as she was, the cookies fascinated her at the moment, even more than the profits which could be made from them. A new baker had brought them in such a variety of flavours, each tasting so good she had to add them to her collection. One day strawberry would be her absolute favourite, the next chocolate, the next cherry. Today was all about lime. The crumble of biscuit, the smoothness of the icing. If her customers weren't quick, soon there would be none left.

Newness! Newness all round. I finally got mesh mouthed, with a Loud Mouth, and have been playing around with various skins and appliers. Some seem easier to match up than others, on low graphics (my usual state for RP etc) some just won't work for me, the difference in texture from skin to applier is too great, and I just looked weird. Combinations like this - some have improved with higher graphics settings, some not - so I will continue to fiddle with those. Other skin combos look good with the Loud Mouth even on low graphics - the pics above were taken on ultra of course, but I'm sat by by fireside now in the lowest of settings and I still look normal!

Beauty among clockwork - DS'Elles @ Skin Fair 2015

Life in the clockwork city tick tock ticked its way, the automatons in each workspace busying through the hours, clanking and whirring, all well oiled machines. The living were something of a rarity in the city now, where once heartbeats reverberated ribcages in every room, now exoskeletons brushed past each other, gliding along rails, no rhythm but that set out by their punch card instructions.

Ines had always got along well with the automatons, nothing strange in that she thought - after all, what was there to dislike? Others moved away from such progress, out of the city, away from the modernisation, the mechanisation. Those who remained could see the potential in those punched cards, perforation after perforation, task after task, the programming grew more complex, the automatons more advanced. Soon, she hoped, they wouldn't need cards, they would run themselves, find their own freedom. They had cleared the city of noise, of crime, of patriarchy, they had given freedom to her, by her own hand. She was ready to return the favour.

Sketch Artist

Knock, Knock, Knock. No answer, no reply. Looking around, he checked the number on the building, it had seemed such an unlikely spot after all. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out a folded note. Torn from thick heavy paper, its edges feathered with fine graphite lines, the fade out of some sketch were overwritten with a confident hand. The address was right, and the time... "Hey" the call spun him on the spot. There she was, the girl with the sketchbook. Grinning, he moved to walk toward her until she held up a hand. "No" she paused, letting her bag drop to the ground, crouching to rummage in it, and rising again with a sliver of charcoal in her hand. "Stay just where you are." As she spoke, more like her appeared, each with sketchpad in hand. Soft murmurings of voices drifted across the lane to him as they nodded to each other. "The light here is perfect..." she said, settling down next to her bag on the cobblestones, her hand already tracing the lines of the building behind him onto the page. "Now, take off your shirt." Changing things up a bit, with one for the bois. More from District 5!

District5

L'école d'art had an expansive summer programme, sending students across the continent in search of ideas. Each student, talented in their own way, packed up their new bags and went out to explore. Everyone was given their choice of equipment, the tools of their trade with which to hone their craft. Some would work in marble, others in fabrics or oils. Each began with pencils and paper, wandering the streets and lanes of strange towns for inspiration. All would come together in the end, in the name of art. Ah... Depraved Nation. NEVER disappoints. If you haven't been to District5 yet, where have you been? What have you been doing? Eh? Wait! Don't go yet! *chuckles* Here's what you can expect.
